  Maryland Sister States Legislative Reception at the Miller Senate Building in Annapolis
Salisbury Sister Cities Board Members joined their Sister Cities and Sister States colleagues, senators, and representatives at the Sister States Legislative Reception on March 23.

First Lady Yumi Hogan, Secretary of State Wobensmith, Deputy Secretary of State Borunda, Lieutenant Governor Rutherford, and Sister Cities International President Mary Kane welcomed guests to the annual event.

The Maryland Sister States Program was established to provide a forum for the promotion of international cooperation and understanding. Founded by President Eisenhower in 1956, Sister Cities International promotes global peace by uniting thousands of cities and towns through citizen diplomats and volunteers.

The delegation from the new Sister State of Piura, Peru invited me to develop exchange programs and teacher training programs with educators from Peruvian institutions. A pilot program through the UMBC English Language Institute TESOL teacher training course will train Peruvian educators. The Director of International Affairs, Mendy Nitsch, introduced me to the Peruvian delegation. We established professional contacts during our search for a South American Sister City.

Our Estonian friends from our Sister City Tartu and Sister State Harju County strengthened our friendships as we forged new global friendships with twenty Sister States, including Jalisco Mexico; Ondo, Nigeria; Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan; and Leningrad, Russia.
